Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International regularly express concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in East Turkistan. However, due to the Chinese authorities' tight controls on information, accurate and timely analysis of developments in East Turkistan is extremely difficult.
Human rights activists agree that without critical support from Uyghur-run human rights organizations, very little information from within East Turkistan will emerge.

UHRP was established by the Uyghur American Association and is
dedicated to researching and exposing human rights abuses committed against
the Uyghur people in East Turkistan.
In a landmark ruling on October 7, U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina paroled the remaining seventeen Uyghurs detained at Guantanamo Bay to the United States. The federal judge ordered that the Uyghurs in Guantanamo be present in Washington, DC on Friday October 10 for a hand over to the Uyghur community in the United States.
According to official Chinese media reports, Deputy Communist Party Secretary Nur Bakri delivered a lengthy speech on September 10 accusing Western countries of instigating terrorism, separatism and extremism in East Turkestan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region).
In the past five weeks the media has reported at great length on a series of attacks in East Turkestan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region). Details on the attacks have been strictly controlled by Chinese authorities and often the only source for information is Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese government’s official news outlet.
